Management

SUNeVision, the technology arm of Sun Hung Kai Properties, is the largest data centre provider in Hong Kong with Asia’s number one connectivity. Its flagship 470,000-square-feet data centre MEGA Plus sits on a greenfield site in Tseung Kwan O, the first plot of land specially set aside by the HKSAR government for high-tier data centre development without any subletting constraints. Perfectly located far from the sea, flood zones and hazardous production plants, the highly reliable and secure site goes with ample power and space to cope with business expansion.

With state-of-the-art infrastructure and world-class facilities, MEGA Plus is the purpose-built data centre meeting the rising business demands for low latency, high availability and high power density from hyperscale customers.

MEGA Plus embodies a range of green design solutions and best practices, including building design and control, management for energy use, carbon emissions, waste and water consumption. Achieved LEED Gold Certification, MEGA Plus’s energy-efficient facilities attain highest level of quality, fulfilling the needs for sustainable developments.

Story

Motivations to Go “Green”

SUNeVision’s pursuit for long-term business continuity and sustainable development is propelled by responsible business strategies and environmental management. We are committed to improving our environmental performance in current data centres while implementing sustainable design elements into new developments.

As the number one data centre provider in Hong Kong with the largest footprint, SUNeVision recognises responsibility for environmental impact which has become a crucial business imperative.  We are committed to promoting sustainability and continuously strive to embed good environmental practices in every aspect of our operation. We believe that decarbonisation within the building and exploring alternative energy sources are significant strategies for lowering GHG emissions and reducing reliance on fossil-based energy sources. Therefore, we give extra attention to articulating the enhancement of energy efficiency to offset the growth in demand.

Our support for the Hong Kong Government’s environmental commitments, such as achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, extends beyond compliance with the laws, as we also emphasise specific environmental material issues, and endeavour to reduce our energy use, carbon emissions, waste and water consumption.

Environmental Protection Strategies

To manage our environmental issues effectively, SUNeVision has published an environmental policy outlining our commitment to achieve sustainability and minimise the adverse impact of our company activities and services on the environment.

We have established targets for our chillers to achieve an overall Coefficient of Performance (“COP”) of 5 or above by the target year 2030, resulting in a reduction in carbon intensity for cooling. We also target to achieve a COP of above 6 and 3 for all new purchases of water-cooled chillers and air-cooled chillers, respectively.

We strategise to:

  • Abide by all applicable environment-related laws and regulations
  • Identify and measure environmental impacts that are related to our activities and impose corresponding solutions to minimise potential adverse effects
  • Communicate environmental policy and management strategies with stakeholders
  • Review and report our environmental performance on a regular basis
  • Promote energy and resources efficiency by using environmentally friendly materials for building design, construction and maintenance
  • Conserve natural resources and reduce waste by adopting the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Replace principles
  • Support environmental education program to raise employees’ environmental awareness

Sustainable Design Elements

SUNeVision’s data centre designs embody a range of green designs and solutions in the areas of cooling, lighting, energy supply, building design and control.

We have joined CLP’s Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Scheme to promote renewable energy use. We have commissioned the first solar panel system located on the rooftop of the MEGA Plus data centre. It is able to generate a maximum of 99.36 MJ renewable energy in an hour under full sunlight conditions.

Other sustainable design elements in MEGA Plus include the iconic green wall, modular-designed data halls, chiller plants in N+1 configuration, high-efficiency water-cooling system, automatic water faucets, LED lightbulbs, etc.

Awards and Certifications

SUNeVision and MEGA Plus have received the following awards and certifications that mark our achievements in driving sustainability:

  • Sustainable Technology Award 2022, by SocietyNext Foundation
  • Smart Energy Award 2021 - Renewable Energy Contribution Award, by China Light & Power Company Syndicate
  • LEED 2009 Core and Shell Development Rating System Gold Certification, by U.S. Green Building Council
