Management

SUNeVision, the technology arm of Sun Hung Kai Properties, is the largest data centre provider in Hong Kong with Asia’s number one connectivity. Its data centre MEGA Two in Shatin is centrally located in Hong Kong with fast and easily accessible transportation, boasting low latency with premium network gateways of high connectivity towards mainland China and the world. MEGA Two has been highly regarded as one of the best choices of the China’s connectivity gateway.

The purpose-built 429,000-square-feet data centre allows flexibility in allocating colocation space and supporting facilities. Customers of all types and sizes rely upon MEGA Two, including national carriers, financial institutions, cloud and IT service providers, system integrators and companies with global and mainland operations. The revitalisation work on multiple floors of MEGA Two strengthen our data centre capability to capture the rising high power-density demands from hyperscale and cloud customers.

MEGA Two embodies a range of green design solutions and best practices, including building design and control, management for energy use, carbon emissions, waste and water consumption.

Green Features

Building Design and Control

  • Data halls built on modular design meet world-class energy efficient standards
  • Chiller plants in N+1 configuration, with dual distribution paths through dual feed independent chiller risers for cooling
  • Installation of Building Management System (BMS) ensures the equipment operates in an efficient manner

Energy Management

  • The use of electrical and mechanical systems such as Uninterruptible Power Supply System (UPS) reduces energy loss
  • High-efficiency water-cooling system reduces energy use for cooling
  • Established targets for chillers to achieve an overall Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 5 or above by 2030 to reduce carbon intensity for cooling
  • LED lightbulbs reduce energy consumption
  • Switch off part of the lifts and lights during non-peak hours or weekends

Water Management

  • Water Leak Detection System detects water leakage such that our Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) can operate at its optimal energy efficiency
  • Rain collector for water cooling

Carbon Emission Management

  • Non-CFC refrigerants reduce direct GHG emissions
  • Purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) lowers carbon footprint

Waste Management

  • Incorporates 4R principle – Reduce-Reuse-Recycle and Replace
  • Three-colour waste separation bins facilitate waste sorting and recycling
  • Hazardous waste collected by licensed vendors for proper treatment
  • Recycle used lead acid lead acid batteries and fluorescent tubes
  • Adopt paperless approach with systems or tasks implemented online

Story

Motivations to Go “Green”

SUNeVision’s pursuit for long-term business continuity and sustainable development is propelled by responsible business strategies and environmental management. We are committed to improving our environmental performance in current data centres while implementing sustainable design elements into new developments.

As the number one data centre provider in Hong Kong with the largest footprint, SUNeVision recognises responsibility for environmental impact which has become a crucial business imperative.  We are committed to promoting sustainability and continuously strive to embed good environmental practices in every aspect of our operation.  We believe that decarbonisation within the building and exploring alternative energy sources are significant strategies for lowering GHG emissions and reducing reliance on fossil-based energy sources. Therefore, we give extra attention to articulating the enhancement of energy efficiency to offset the growth in demand.

Our support for the Hong Kong Government’s environmental commitments, such as achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, extends beyond compliance with the laws, as we also emphasise specific environmental material issues, and endeavour to reduce our energy use, carbon emissions, waste and water consumption.

Environmental Protection Strategies

To manage our environmental issues effectively, SUNeVision has published an environmental policy outlining our commitment to achieve sustainability and minimise the adverse impact of our company activities and services on the environment.

We have established targets for our chillers to achieve an overall Coefficient of Performance (“COP”) of 5 or above by the target year 2030, resulting in a reduction in carbon intensity for cooling. We also target to achieve a COP of above 6 and 3 for all new purchases of water-cooled chillers and air-cooled chillers, respectively.

We strategise to:

  • Abide by all applicable environment-related laws and regulations
  • Identify and measure environmental impacts that are related to our activities and impose corresponding solutions to minimise potential adverse effects
  • Communicate environmental policy and management strategies with stakeholders
  • Review and report our environmental performance on a regular basis
  • Promote energy and resources efficiency by using environmentally friendly materials for building design, construction and maintenance
  • Conserve natural resources and reduce waste by adopting the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Replace principles
  • Support environmental education program to raise employees’ environmental awareness

Sustainable Design Elements

SUNeVision’s data centre designs embody a range of green designs and solutions in the areas of cooling, lighting, energy supply, building design and control.

The power density and infrastructure of MEGA Two have been upgraded for sustainable growth. The revitalisation work allows existing customers to increase their power utilisation without the need to expand floor area and enables new customers with high-power requirements to establish their presence in the facilities.

Awards and Certifications

SUNeVision and MEGA Two have received the following awards and certifications that mark our achievements in driving sustainability:

  • Sustainable Technology Award 2022, by SocietyNext Foundation
  • Smart Energy Award 2021 - Renewable Energy Contribution Award, by China Light & Power Company Syndicate
