Story

Established in 1911, The University of Hong Kong is the oldest tertiary institution in the territory and has been a leading research body in Hong Kong. Besides academic excellence, cultural prosperity is equally valued. It is the University's mission “to develop a collegial, flexible, pluralistic and supportive intellectual environment that inspires and attracts, retains and nurtures scholars, students and staff of the highest calibre in a culture that fosters creativity, learning and freedom of thought, enquiry and expression”.

The design process began with a detail study into the unique site context and Client Brief. In particular the need to maintain and integrate the existing pedestrian network, loading constraints of the existing underlying structure and environmental sensitivity of the site in terms of noise and other pollutants in the context of an operating university campus.

The “Floating box” theatre concept addressed the inherent loading limitations while avoiding the need for new foundations and minimizing alteration works. Lightweight construction adopted standard steel sections with modular panel cladding pre-finished in natural zinc both as a means to minimizing waste and ensuring quality on site. The insulated building envelope along with self-shading of window openings provides for low heat gains while strategically placed skylights and voids bring natural light to pre-function areas. Discreet building services include a bespoke air plenum design that reduces the cooling load in the theatre.

To minimize visual disturbance to the adjacent Chong Yuet Ming fountain and historical Eliot Hall, a subtle palette of grey and bronze colour tones was chosen for the building façade. Paving and planters around the building integrate with the existing fountain and mature trees that encompass the site.

The Final Gold rating under the BEAM Plus New Buildings V1.2 reflects the unique design qualities achieved in response to specific site constraints. The result is a delicate balance between preserving key qualities of the existing environment and injecting innovative designs to the campus providing a comfortable and flexible environment for a diverse range of cultural activities.
